Windows & Conservatories

Window and Conservatory Maintenance, Adjustments and Repairs

Windows and conservatories usually need attention long before they need replacing. Handles wear, hinges drop, seals perish and trims work loose — and each of those is a maintenance job rather than a new installation.

MR HANDY covers maintenance and adjustment work of this kind. Glazing replacement and structural alterations are specialist work and are not undertaken.

Worth Knowing

What Maintenance Fixes and What It Does Not

A window that has become stiff or will not pull up tight is usually a hinge or handle issue rather than a frame problem. Adjusting the hinges or replacing worn gear restores the compression against the seal.

Draughts most often come from perished gaskets rather than the glass. Replacing the seal is inexpensive and makes a noticeable difference.

Water sitting inside the frame is often a blocked drainage slot. Clearing it takes minutes and prevents damage that is much more expensive later.

Some things are not maintenance. Misted or blown double glazing means the sealed unit has failed and needs replacing by a glazier. Cracked glass, structural conservatory repairs and replacement frames are all specialist work — we will tell you when that is what you are looking at rather than attempting it.

Questions

Windows & Conservatories FAQs

If your question is not here, ask — you will get a straight answer.
Can you replace a misted double glazed unit?
No. A misted unit means the seal on the glass itself has failed and it needs replacing by a glazier. We will confirm that is what you are dealing with so you know what to ask for.
My window will not close properly — is that fixable?
Usually. It is most often hinges or the locking gear rather than the frame, and both can normally be adjusted or replaced. Send a photograph when you get in touch and we can give you an idea before visiting.
Do you install new windows or conservatories?
No. New installations, replacement frames and structural conservatory work are specialist jobs. What we cover is the maintenance, adjustment and finishing work around existing ones.
