Everyday Plumbing Repairs, Done Properly and Priced Up Front

A dripping tap, a toilet that will not stop running, a slow basin or a leak under the sink are the kind of jobs that get put up with for months, because calling a plumber out for something so small feels like overkill. They are exactly the jobs MR HANDY takes on.

The work covered here is the everyday water-side plumbing in a home: taps, toilets, wastes, traps, radiators, valves and appliance connections. Gas is a separate trade and is never touched — anything involving a boiler or a gas appliance needs a Gas Safe registered engineer, and you will be told so plainly.

Worth Knowing

Why Small Plumbing Faults Are Worth Fixing Early

Water finds its way into places it should not, and it does it slowly. A tap that drips into the basin is a nuisance; a joint weeping into the cupboard underneath is quietly ruining the carcass, the floor and possibly the ceiling below. The cost of the fix rarely changes — the cost of what it damages does.

Most tap and toilet faults come down to a worn part rather than the whole fitting: a ceramic cartridge, a washer, a fill valve or a flush valve. Where the part is available the repair is straightforward and much cheaper than replacement. Where the fitting is old enough that parts are no longer made, you will be told that before anything is taken apart.

Wastes and traps block for predictable reasons — hair and soap in bathrooms, fat and food in kitchens. Clearing them is usually quick, but a waste that keeps blocking often points to a run with too little fall or a trap that was never right, and it is worth fixing the cause rather than clearing it every few months.

Radiators that are cold at the top need bleeding; cold at the bottom usually means sludge. Both are dealt with, along with valves that seize and radiators that need to come off the wall for decorating and go back on afterwards. Boilers, gas fires and anything on the gas side of the system are a registered engineer's job and are always referred on.

In Practice

Typical Jobs

Real examples of the kind of job this covers.
  • Replacing a dripping kitchen mixer tap
  • Fixing a toilet that runs constantly or fills slowly
  • Tracing and stopping a leak under a bathroom basin
  • Clearing a blocked shower waste and refitting the trap
  • Plumbing in a new washing machine or dishwasher
  • Taking radiators off for decorating and refitting them

Why MR HANDY

Why Use MR HANDY for Plumbing

Small plumbing jobs are welcome on their own, and they fit naturally alongside the other work MR HANDY does — a new tap when a kitchen is fitted, a basin waste when a bathroom is redecorated, radiators off and back on when a room is painted. One visit covers the lot.

The limits are stated rather than blurred. Water-side plumbing is covered; gas, boilers and unvented hot water cylinders are not, and where a job crosses that line you will be told before work starts, not halfway through.

Questions

Plumbing FAQs

If your question is not here, ask — you will get a straight answer.
Do you do boiler, gas or central heating work?
No gas work of any kind. Boilers, gas fires, gas hobs and anything on the gas side of a heating system must be handled by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Radiators, valves, bleeding and balancing on the water side are covered.
Can you fit a tap, toilet or basin I have already bought?
Yes. Labour-only fitting of your own fittings is common. Send a photograph of what you have and of where it is going, and the quote will cover fitting plus any extra parts needed, such as flexible connectors or a new waste.
Do you cover emergency leaks?
Turn the water off at the stop tap first — that is the most important step. Then call and describe what is happening. If it can be fitted in the same day it will be, and if not you will be told straight away so you can find someone who can.
Can you plumb in a washing machine or dishwasher?
Yes, where there is an existing supply and waste nearby. Running new pipework to a different room is a bigger job and is quoted separately.
Do you replace whole bathroom suites?
Bathroom fit-outs are handled under Property Renovations, with the plumbing for basins, toilets, baths and showers included as part of that work. For a like-for-like swap of a single item, ask under plumbing.
