Worth Knowing

Skim, Patch or Replace

The first thing to establish is whether the existing plaster is still bonded to the wall. Tapping across the surface tells you quickly — a hollow sound means it has blown and will need taking off, however good it looks.

If the plaster is sound but tired, a skim coat over the top is usually the right answer. It levels the surface and gives a clean base without the mess and cost of stripping back.

Patch repairs need the edges cutting back to something solid, otherwise the repair will crack along the join. Getting a patch flush with the surrounding wall matters more than getting it done quickly.

Freshly plastered walls need to dry before they are painted, and the first coat should be a thinned mist coat. Painting too early or too thickly is the usual reason new plaster peels.

How long before I can paint new plaster?

It needs to be fully dry, which depends on the thickness, the room and the time of year rather than a fixed number of days. The colour evening out across the whole wall is the usual sign. We will tell you what to look for on your job.

Can you skim over artex?

Often yes, provided it is sound and not too heavily textured. Where the pattern is very raised it may need flattening first. Please note that older textured coatings can contain asbestos, so where there is any doubt about the age we will recommend having it tested before anything is disturbed.

Do you patch small areas or only whole walls?

Both. Patch repairs are very common and often all that is needed. Where a wall has many separate patches, skimming the whole thing sometimes works out better — we will tell you which makes sense.
