Why Doors Stick, Drop and Refuse to Latch

A door that catches at the top on one side has almost always dropped on its hinges. Often the fix is tightening or repositioning the hinge screws rather than taking anything off the door — screws that have lost their grip in soft timber can be re-fixed properly with longer screws into the frame.

A door that will not latch is usually a keep plate slightly out of alignment, not a faulty latch. Moving the plate a few millimetres is a much better answer than forcing the door.

When a door genuinely needs trimming, it matters where the material comes off. Taking too much from one edge changes the gap around the whole door and can expose the lock block.

Skirting and architrave are what make joinery look finished. Mitres that meet cleanly and scribed internal corners are the difference between a job that looks fitted and one that looks patched.

Can you fit doors I have already bought?

Yes. Most internal doors need trimming to the opening and the hinges and latch cutting in, all of which is included in the fitting. Let us know how many doors and whether handles are being reused.

My door drags on the carpet — does it need cutting?

Not always. Check the hinges first, because a dropped door often just needs the hinges re-fixing. If the floor covering has changed height then trimming is usually the right answer.

Do you replace skirting throughout a room?

Yes, either a full room or individual damaged lengths. If a new floor is going down, fitting the flooring first and the skirting afterwards usually gives the neatest finish.
