Not on the List? Describe the Job and Ask

The service pages cover the work MR HANDY does most, but plenty of jobs do not fit neatly under any heading. A pressure-washed driveway, a boarded loft, a key safe by the front door, a shed that arrived in forty pieces — they are all still jobs, and no job is too small.

If what you need is not listed anywhere on this site, this is the page for it. Describe the job in your own words, send a photograph if it helps, and you will get one of two honest answers: a price, or the name of the trade that should be doing it instead.

Worth Knowing

How an Unusual Job Gets Priced

Most jobs that seem unusual are ordinary once they are broken down. A loft that needs boarding is joists, insulation depth and a hatch; a key safe is a fixing into masonry; a shed is a base, an assembly and a felted roof. The first step is always the same — understand what the job actually consists of — and a clear description with a couple of photographs usually gets there without a visit.

Some things are genuinely another trade's work. Gas, notifiable electrical work, roofing, structural alterations, glazing replacement and anything needing scaffolding are not taken on, however small the job looks. That is said at the outset rather than discovered halfway through, and where possible you will be pointed towards the right kind of tradesperson.

Work at height is limited to what can be reached safely from a ladder. Clearing the gutters on a bungalow or a standard two-storey house is fine; anything that would need a tower or roof access is not.

Lists are welcome. If the unusual job comes with a dozen ordinary ones — a shelf, a sticking door, a dripping tap — send the whole list and the visit is quoted as one, which is almost always cheaper than dealing with each job on its own.

In Practice

Typical Jobs

Real examples of the kind of job this covers.
  • Pressure washing a block-paved driveway and resanding the joints
  • Boarding part of a loft and fitting a folding ladder
  • Fitting a key safe and a grab rail for an elderly relative
  • Assembling a garden shed on an existing base
  • Moving a wardrobe and bed between floors before a carpet is fitted
  • Clearing gutters and refixing a loose downpipe on a two-storey house

Why MR HANDY

Why Ask MR HANDY

You deal with one person who will give you a straight answer. If the job can be done well, it is quoted before any work starts; if it cannot, you are told so and, where possible, told who does that kind of work. It costs nothing to ask.

Odd jobs are the core of the business, not an afterthought. Being asked to do something slightly unusual is normal, and the same care over preparation, fixings and tidying up applies whether the job takes twenty minutes or two days.

Questions

Any Other Services FAQs

If your question is not here, ask — you will get a straight answer.
How do I ask about a job that is not listed?
Use the quote form and choose Any Other Services, then describe the job in your own words. Photographs help enormously — of the thing itself and of the space around it. You will get a price, or a clear explanation of why it needs a different trade.
Is there anything you definitely will not do?
Gas work, notifiable electrical work, roofing, structural alterations, glazing replacement and anything requiring scaffolding or roof access. Those need a registered or specialist trade, and you will be told so straight away.
Do you do work for businesses as well as homes?
Yes. Small maintenance and fitting jobs for offices, shops, salons and rental properties are welcome — shelving, repairs, decorating, fixtures and the general upkeep that keeps a premises presentable.
Can you do a one-off job, or does it need to be a list?
Either. A single small job is fine. If there is anything else you have been putting off it is worth adding, because the set-up cost of a visit is shared across everything done in it.
What if you cannot tell whether the job is possible until you see it?
Then a visit is arranged to look at it properly, with no charge and no obligation. It is better to look first than to quote blind and change the price later.
