Fencing, Repairs and Practical Outdoor Work
Fences almost always fail at the posts. Panels take the wind, but it is the post at ground level that rots first, and replacing panels around a failing post only delays the same job.
MR HANDY fits and repairs domestic fencing across Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, along with gates and other practical outdoor work.

Worth Knowing
Posts, Panels and What Fails First
Timber posts rot at the point where they meet the ground, because that is where moisture and air meet. A post can look sound above ground and be gone at the base — pushing the fence firmly is usually enough to find out.
Concrete posts with gravel boards last considerably longer than timber set straight into soil, because the panel is kept clear of the ground. It costs more at the outset and less over time.
Where posts are being replaced, spacing matters. Standard panels are a fixed width, so posts set even slightly out of line mean panels that need cutting or forcing.
Boundaries are worth checking before work starts. If a fence sits on a shared line, it is sensible to speak to your neighbour first — we will always point this out where it looks relevant.
