Exterior Work

Exterior Painting, Fascias and External Repairs

Outside work is mostly about keeping water where it belongs. Paint that has started to flake, a soffit that has gone soft, a joint that has opened up — none of it looks urgent, and all of it lets water into places that cost more to put right later.

MR HANDY covers exterior painting, fascia and soffit work and general external repairs across Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, at heights that can be safely reached from ladders or a tower.

Worth Knowing

Preparation and Weather Outside

Exterior paint fails from underneath. Painting over flaking or damp surfaces buys a season at most, so cleaning down, scraping back and priming bare areas is the bulk of the work.

Timing matters outside in a way it does not indoors. Masonry paint needs dry surfaces and reasonable temperatures to cure, and a cold or damp spell means waiting rather than pushing on and getting a poor result.

Fascias and soffits are worth looking at whenever guttering is being cleared. Soft or discoloured timber usually means water has been getting behind, and the cause needs correcting as well as the timber.

Height is the limit on this kind of work. Anything requiring scaffolding, roof access or working at significant height is a specialist job, and we will say so rather than take it on.

Questions

Exterior Work FAQs

If your question is not here, ask — you will get a straight answer.
What time of year should exterior painting be done?
Dry, mild conditions give much the best result, so spring through early autumn is usually sensible. Surfaces need to be dry and temperatures reasonable for the paint to cure properly.
Do you work at height or use scaffolding?
Work is carried out at heights that can be safely reached from ladders or a tower. Anything needing scaffolding or roof access is a specialist job and we will tell you if that is what yours requires.
Can you replace just part of a fascia?
Yes, where the surrounding timber is sound a damaged section can be replaced. If the run has failed more widely we will tell you rather than patching something that will need doing again.
