What Good Preparation Actually Means

Preparation starts with looking at the surface honestly. Old emulsion that is sound can be washed down, keyed and painted over. Flaking paint, blown plaster or damp patches need dealing with first, because paint applied over a failing surface will fail with it.

Filler goes into cracks and nail holes, then gets sanded back flush rather than left proud. Gaps where skirting meets the wall are caulked so the line reads straight. Edges are cut in by hand where masking would leave a ridge.

New plaster needs a thinned mist coat before full coats, otherwise the paint sits on the surface and peels later. Woodwork that has been painted many times often needs sanding back and priming rather than another coat on top.

Wallpaper is judged by the wall behind it as much as by the hanging. A lining coat or a sized wall stops the paper drawing moisture unevenly, which is what makes seams open up a few weeks later. Patterned papers also need the drop planned so the repeat lands sensibly at the corners rather than wherever it happens to fall.

Masonry paint outside is a different job again. It needs a stable, dry surface and a breathable coating, because sealing damp into a wall causes more damage than leaving it unpainted. Chalky or previously limewashed surfaces usually need stabilising first.

None of this is complicated, but skipping it is the most common reason a room needs redoing sooner than it should.

Do I need to empty the room before you start?
Not completely. Moving smaller items and anything breakable helps, but furniture can usually be moved to the centre of the room and covered. Tell us what is in the room when you request a quote and we can plan around it.
Can you paint over wallpaper?
Sometimes. If the paper is well stuck down and the seams are flat it can be sealed and painted. If it is lifting, textured or already painted several times, stripping it usually gives a better and longer-lasting result. We will tell you which applies once we have seen it.
Do you hang wallpaper as well as paint?
Yes — full rooms or a single feature wall, including stripping the existing paper and preparing or lining the wall first. Tell us the paper you have chosen when you request a quote, because heavy patterned and non-woven papers hang differently and it affects both the time and how much you need to buy.
Do you supply the paint or should I?
Either works. Many customers prefer to choose and buy their own colours, and we are happy to work with what you supply. If you would rather we sourced it, tell us the finish and colour you want and we will include it in the quote.
How long does a typical room take?
It depends far more on the condition of the surfaces than the size of the room. A sound room with light preparation is quicker than a smaller one needing filling and sanding throughout. We will give you an honest estimate for your rooms rather than a standard figure.
